On 14 April 2026, Girls’ Day took place: the national day on which girls aged 10 to 15 are introduced to technology and IT through hands-on activities and experiencing the workplace. Companies and educational institutions across the Netherlands opened their doors to show how important and versatile technology is for the future. Currently, only 1 in 6 people working in technology and IT is a woman.

Girls’ Day also had a great programme in the IJmond region this year. Tata Steel Academy, IW Noord-Holland, and Nova College jointly organised activities in which girls discovered technology in practice. From craftsmanship and innovation to the role of technology in major societal challenges such as the energy transition and sustainability.

Participants got hands-on and met professionals from the sector, making it clear how diverse and promising a career in technology is. The result: one in three girls indicated they were more interested in technology afterwards.

More diversity in the sector is essential. It brings new perspectives, stimulates innovation, and helps to address staff shortages. This is particularly valuable in our region, where there are major challenges in terms of sustainable industry and energy supply.
