5 tips for choosing an advanced education with your child

My child deserves the best

Which school will my child choose? And how will that choice determine his or her future?

As a parent, you want the best for your child. You want them to find work that makes them happy, be guaranteed a job, grow in their work and then earn a good salary too. Here are 5 tips for talking about this with your child.

TIP 1

Check if your image matches that of your child

From elementary school to secondary school, from secondary school to vocational education; young people often make that choice together with their parents. Important here is an up-to-date and realistic picture of the future professions and the courses that go with them. Is your picture still correct? Will your child be happy sitting behind a desk with a computer screen all day or will he or she flourish by doing or making things? Do your future dreams for your child match those of your son or daughter?

TIP 2

Know what is going on in your child's future

We don't always think about it but engineering and technology is everywhere. Making and keeping people healthy, attending a festival or transitioning to renewable energy, we cannot do without engineering and technology. Hydrogen manager, wind engineer, electric charging project manager, junior consultant sustainability. Just a few examples of new professions that require engineering and technology. Google the top 10 occupations with the most job openings, and it turns out that almost all of them also have a link to engineering and technology. Do you know which schools are capitalizing on this and what they have to offer?

TIP 3

Ask what your child thinks is important

If you ask children what they want to be when they grow up, they often don't know. If you ask them what they think is important for their future, they often already have an idea. A house to live in. Enough money to live or travel. A clean world. Our IJmond region also faces a major challenge when it comes to a cleaner living environment, energy transition or sufficient housing. The solution lies mainly in technology and innovation.

TIP 4

Look not only at level but also at direction

In engineering and technology, there is a bright future for every child. In IJmond, the schools are prepared for this. Just look at the various technical courses at the vmbo-vocational secondary school, the Tech-Mavo, the Technasium for the havo/vwo and for the mbo, for example, the MyTec course with Smart Maintenance. In IJmond, your child can do anything in engineering and technology.

TIP 5

In addition to the 'open house,' visit especially do afternoons and let your child study on a trial basis

Every school likes to show its best side during the open house. But if you want your child to experience what school is really like, also visit 'hands-on afternoons' at secondary schools or go to 'test study' at the mbo.
