Techport companies launch joint search for skilled workers

Techport companies have joined together in the search for skilled workers. Through the meeting "Employers: getting started with the employer scan," Techport brought together the region's technical companies so that they could exchange experiences and solutions to the personnel shortage.

Twenty-two company scans were conducted at companies in the region that clearly revealed what policies, processes, structures and activities are already in place to facilitate sustainable lateral entry.

No Focus on Sidewalkers

The scans show that Techport companies do not currently undertake any specific activities aimed at recruiting lateral entrants. Employers are mainly focusing on technical professionals coming out of secondary vocational education. A number of companies have hired lateral entrants with varying experiences. They indicate that people with a different background often do not yet speak the 'language' of the technical company and that the guidance on the work floor is often more intensive.

More recruiters than professionals

There are more recruiters than professionals out there. When a company posts a vacancy, they have a day's work to do in order to deal with recruiters. Companies also indicate that they don't really post vacancies' In the current (tight) labor market, aimed at economic growth of a company, it appears that companies mainly buy personnel from each other or hire through temporary employment agencies.

Fishing together in the same pond

Of the companies, 33% cooperate with a training provider such as Nova College, Harpotech, Installatiewerk Beverwijk and Tetrix. In the region, 15% of the labor force works in the maintenance and manufacturing industry. People with an MBO work and thinking level are willing to travel 5 km daily to work. If you look at the group we are fishing in the same pond that does not multiply by itself.

To expand the number of people in engineering, Techport is going to develop a "hands on" strategy for lateral entrants based on the outcome of the scans with Techport companies.
