Successfully innovating with data

Increasingly, companies see data as an important asset to their organization. It is used to improve decision-making, update business processes or even as an engine for innovation (data-driven innovation). However, research shows that using data to innovate does not always lead to immediate success.

Interplay of technology, process and people

The Free University, partner of the Fieldlab, conducted a qualitative study on this within the Fieldlab with students, looking at how a project team, which had collected a rich set of data on the functioning of a machine through sensors, handled and tried to learn from the data. The results of the study showed that it is important not only to focus on the data and technology, but also to pay specific attention to human and process barriers. Data is not directly usable as a "resource," despite its potential. To make data valuable, people and teams must interpret data through sensemaking processes and assign value to data in order to take action based on the data.
