Tata Steel's immense industrial site in IJmuiden - 750 hectares in all - has 17 factories and adjacent facilities that are intensively intertwined. The entire steel production process happens here: from the supply of raw materials - coal and iron ore - to the loading of ready-to-use rolls of steel to customers.
Close coordination between all these links is crucial to ensure the continuity of steel production. Needless to say, scheduling maintenance is then a complex job.
Every year, entire sections of the site experience a summer shutdown of several days, during which factories and facilities are completely shut down. For regular maintenance, some 600 maintenance professionals walk around the plants.
