Ichthus Lyceum students delve into hydrogen

In February, students from the Ichthus Lyceum (Driehuis) presented their future vision of the production of green steel and the layout of Tata Steel's premises. In their stories, they answered some pressing Technasium questions that also concern employees of the steel company.

The Ichthus Lyceum is a Technasium. Students research realistic questions, dilemmas and problems and come up with an answer. The assignment for the fourth- and fifth-year vwo students consisted of three elements: How does Tata Steel obtain the green hydrogen for its Direct Reduced Iron process? What will that look like in 20 years at the Tata Steel complex in Velsen? And: Design the new skyline of Tata Steel Velsen as it might look in 20 years. To work out the assignment, the students studied the production process of hydrogen and the plans that have now been made to produce and transport hydrogen in the Netherlands, among other things.

Presentations and knowledge exchange

Students built models for their presentations, 3D-printed factory buildings and wind turbines or came up with other ways to visualize their stories. The stories were evaluated by the students' own teachers and experts from Tata Steel's green steel team. Overall conclusion was that the students had studied the subject matter well and came up with relevant solutions. Thus it was a great day with a lot of knowledge exchange and an impressive tour of the company premises.

Technasium assignments, company visits and guest lectures are means of introducing young people to engineering, the importance of technological developments and their social impact. Tata Steel has more such programs, including for Techport schools.
