Every 35+ person should take a course
'Digital developments in the workplace are happening so fast that no one will retire with the knowledge they once learned in school. So companies need to retrain their employees. For the big ones that's not a problem, but for the many small SMEs it's a challenge.'
Egbert-Jan Sol is program director of Smart Industry (smart industry) at research institute TNO. He conducts research on how business can prepare for the digital revolution currently taking place in industry, but also in the agricultural sector.
Sol is convinced: digitization is leading to nothing less than a social revolution. 'The way people work will change rigorously. Everyone will have to continuously educate themselves. In doing so, the current education system is no longer adequate. It must become much more individualistic, in small modules. We have to help people who do not have much education and prefer to work with their hands in the coming years. But in a way that they enjoy. We are trying to do that with field labs. In various places in the country, initiatives are starting up to prepare people for digitization through short, practical courses.'
One such field lab is located in the IJmond region. Techport, a joint initiative of education, government and business, aims to train older workers in industry here for future digital challenges.
