Technolab activities in SHIP transferred to Maritime College IJmuiden
The Maritime College IJmuiden is taking over from Techport the engineering activities of the Technolab in SHIP for elementary students. The water tanks used to teach elementary students how a lock works will move to Briniostraat in IJmuiden where both the Maritime College and the Technical College Velsen are located.
The water tanks are used in the technique activities for elementary school set up by the Sterk Techniek Onderwijs regio IJmond/Zuid-Kennemerland (STO). The aim is to introduce pupils to the maritime world in general and the technology of the lock and port area around the North Sea Canal in particular.
Between 2017 and 2020, students attended technique workshops in the Technolab in SHIP with the theme of Lock and Port. With a grant from the municipality of Velsen, three different workshops based on the 7 Worlds for Technology were developed and implemented. These workshops have contributed to the implementation of one of the ambitions within Techport's action line Choosing Technology. Namely, to create a good and positive image of opportunities in engineering and technology among students, teachers and parents. Over 6,000 students visited the Technolab in SHIP together with their teachers and parents, who actually participated in the workshops as facilitators.
Due to corona, it has not been possible to host students in SHIP in the 2020-2021 school year. This has accelerated the already planned transfer of the Technolab's activities in SHIP to a new partner. In collaboration with STO, the "corona year" was used to explore ways to continue the programming and use of the Technolab's water tanks in SHIP. STO, following the subsidy from the municipality of Velsen, makes it possible to guarantee the supply of lock and port technology activities in the region for a longer period of time.
Danielle van der Mark, program leader Opting for Technology: 'We are very pleased that the water tanks have found a good destination and that the Maritime College is continuing and further developing the activities of Techport. In cooperation with STO we are currently working on a continuous learning line for primary education in the field of water. The lessons with the water tanks fit perfectly into this. And not only that; this continuous learning line also fits in with another ambition of the action line 'Choosing Technology' of Techport: students receive more and more Science & Technology education in a structural and organized way!
