The opportunities of data

What opportunities does data actually offer companies? The partners of the Fieldlab Smart Maintenance measure the operation of installations with various sensors in Techport's pilot plant and do their own analyses on the resulting data. Bringing the analyzed data of the partners together and in addition allowing the sensors to communicate with each other can lead to new insights and to new (data driven) business models.

Within Techport's Fieldlab Smart Maintenance, 13 companies and knowledge institutions are working together to develop predictable maintenance in the manufacturing and maintenance industry. Sensors are placed on installations and the failure behavior of installations is predicted based on the data from these sensors. At the end of January, the Fieldlab Smart Maintenance partners attended a workshop led by Frans Feldberg, professor of Data Driven Business Innovation at VU University Amsterdam, on the opportunities that linking data offers for companies. Gerik ten Berge, program manager Innovation at Techport:"One of the things that emerged here is that there must be a lot of attention between the translation of strategic goals in the field of data and the practical side. Clear communication between the top of the companies and the shop floor is important here. You should always ask yourself what data brings to the operators and maintenance staff. Good visibility into the issues and challenges of the asset owner helps with this."

There appears to be a need for good examples where you can see what bundled data analysis has achieved in practice. For example, in reducing downtime or reducing energy consumption. Gerik: "Techport plays an important role in this. Techport shares examples, establishes contacts between the shop floor and management and develops education on this topic. Techport can also take on a marketplace function between plant owners and suppliers of new technologies such as sensor technology, digital twins and big data analytics."
