In 2013, it became clear that the national shortage of technicians is also affecting the IJmond region. Among other things, the rise of popular training fields such as economics means that fewer young people are choosing engineering. Companies also have to deal with an aging population, among other things, which means that specific technological knowledge is disappearing. In addition, the rise of new technologies such as robotization and digitization is so rapid that the current training courses are in danger of missing the connection with the companies and technology of the future.

This prompted parties from business, government and education to join forces: Techport was founded by the municipality of Velsen, the province of North Holland, ROC Nova College and the companies Zwart Techniek, Crown van Gelder and Tata Steel.

Techport was established in 2013 with the goal of increasing the economic growth and resilience of the IJmond region.

Techport is for those entrepreneurs, school principals and officials who want to make a strong case for the future of the manufacturing and maintenance industry. Whether it's fueling engineering talent or improving processes.

Public-private partnership is a form of cooperation between a government, business and schools. Within this collaboration, the government does not interfere with the content and steers completely towards the desired end goal. Thus, the companies and schools have complete freedom to shape the implementation as they see fit. In this way, governments want to make use of the thinking and innovation power of the market.

Techport focuses on the Amsterdam Metropolitan Area, with IJmond as its core and location. But Techport is there for the entire Dutch manufacturing and maintenance industry.

Together with more than 90 companies, schools and governments, Techport has the ambition to become the first green industrial zone of the Netherlands.Techport stimulates lateral entry, accelerates technological innovation and develops regional training offers for the jobs of the future, thus contributing to the acceleration of the energy transition and sustainability of the region.

The manufacturing industry plays an important role in the IJmond region. 22% of the added value of the regional economy comes from industry. And 75% of this industry consists of manufacturing. As a result, 22% of high school graduates have a technical profession, and 23% of workers in IJmond also work in the manufacturing or energy region.
